Residential Water Heaters (RWH)

Resources

Program Scope

Electric storage water heaters with energy input ratings less than or equal to 12 kilowatts and a storage capacity of not less than 20 gallons or more than 120 gallons.
Heat pump water heaters that use electricity as the energy source, have a maximum current rating of 24 amperes for an input voltage of 250 volts or less, a storage capacity of not less than 20 gallons or more than 120 gallons, and is designed to transfer thermal energy from one temperature level to a higher temperature level for the purpose of heating water, including all ancillary equipment such as fans, storage tanks, pumps, or controls necessary for the device to perform its function.
Gas storage water heaters with energy input ratings less than or equal to 75,000 Btu/h, with a storage capacity of not less than 20 gallons or greater than 100 gallons, and contains more than one gallon of water per 4,000 Btu per hour of input.
Gas instantaneous water heaters with energy input greater than 50,000 Btu/h but less than or equal to 200,000 Btu/h, with a DOE-rated storage volume of less than 2 gallons and no more than one gallon of water per 4,000 Btu per hour of input.
Oil storage water heaters with energy input less than or equal to 105,000 Btu/h, with a storage capacity of 50 gallons or less, and contains more than one gallon of water per 4,000 Btu per hour of input.
Electric instantaneous water heaters with energy input ratings less than or equal to 12 kilowatts, with a DOE-rated storage volume of less than 2 gallons, and contains no more than one gallon of water per 4,000 Btu per hour of input.
Residential-duty commercial water heaters that meet the following criteria:
For models requiring electricity, uses single-phase external power supply; Is not designed to provide outlet hot water at temperatures greater than 180 °F; and Is not one of the following: Gas-fired storage water heater with a rated input greater than 105 kBtu/h or a DOE-rated storage volume greater than 120 gallons; oil-fired storage water heater with a rated input greater than 140 kBtu/h or a DOE-rated storage volume greater than 120 gallons; or an electric instantaneous water heater with a rated input greater than 58.6 kW or a DOE-rated storage volume greater than 2 gallons.

The rules and procedures for obtaining and maintaining certification are detailed in the Resources section above. The specific Standard listed above details the technical requirements for rating and publishing your product performance, the AHRI General Operations Manual (OM) details the program operational rules that are generic to all of AHRI’s certification programs and lastly, the Product-specific Operations Manual provides the operational rules that are specific to this program along with the required documents and fees. Please ensure that you are familiar with the latest rules and procedures for this program.
