Space-constrained and Small Duct High Velocity Products
This map shows that space-constrained AC/HP and small duct high velocity products use the National energy efficiency standards throughout the US.
There is only one National energy efficiency standard for these types of products in the US. Under M1, minimum energy efficiency standards remain approximately the same as the pre-2023 standards.
Space-constrained AC/HP and small duct high-velocity systems are enforced based on the date of manufacture. Therefore, any product compliant with the applicable regulation on its manufacture date can be sold and installed anywhere in the US after January 1, 2023.
For example, a 14.0 SEER split-system heat pump built before January 1, 2023, can still be installed throughout the US. The manufacturer is solely responsible for ensuring compliance with heat pump and specialty AC energy efficiency regulations.
The table below shows the change in numerical values for space-constrained AC/HP and small duct high-velocity system minimum efficiency standards.
Product Class | Pre-2023 M Standards |
New 2023 M1 Standards | Enforcement |
---|---|---|---|
Space-constrained Air Conditioner | 12 SEER | 11.7 SEER2 (Equivalent to 12 SEER) |
Units manufactured before January 1, 2023 that were compliant with previous standards may be installed after January 1, 2023. Applies nationally. |
Space-constrained Heat Pump | 12 SEER | 7.4 HSPF | 11.9 SEER2 | 6.3 HSPF2 (Equivalent to 12 SEER | 7.4 HSPF) |
Units manufactured before January 1, 2023 that were compliant with previous standards may be installed after January 1, 2023. Applies nationally. |
Small Duct High-velocity Systems | 12 SEER | 7.2 HSPF | 12 SEER2 | 6.1 HSPF2 (Equivalent to 12 SEER | 7.2 HSPF) |
Units manufactured before January 1, 2023 that were compliant with previous standards may be installed after January 1, 2023. Applies nationally. |
